THE PROFICIENCY AWARDS PROGRAM

What is a proficiency award?

Proficiency Awards are a State recognised awards scheme established to encourage children to strive towards a level of swimming that would keep them safe in the water.  There are four levels of proficiency awards; being Gold, Silver, Bronze and Elementary.  Each level increases in difficulty in regards to both distance and time limits and each level requires the swimmer to demonstrate correct stroke technique.  In order to attain your Proficiency Awards, you must be examined by a qualified SwimmingSA Proficiency Award Assessor and pass all necessary criteria for the level you are attempting.  If you are successful in your examination, you will be presented with a medallion of the appropriate level at no extra cost.

Who is eligible for a proficiency award?

Proficiency Awards are open to all children who are water confident and who believe they are able to make the criteria. There is no restriction to age, gender or disability; so long as stroke technique is correct and time limits (if required) apply, all may participate.  SwimmingSA is currently working with the Technical Committee to provide adjusted time limits for various levels of disability to enable broader participation.

How do I apply for a proficiency award examination?

Examinations only occur where there are a minimum number of applicants.  Approach your local club, swim school or aquatic centre to see when they plan to schedule the next examination date.  Alternatively, you can register your interest with SwimmingSA, who will notify you of the next upcoming examination.  To apply, you simply complete the Application for Proficiency form and pay the corresponding fee or $8.00 per award or $3.00 to re-do an award.

Levels that can be achieved are:

Elementary - Complete 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 50m breaststroke, with correct technique, starts, turns and finishes according to Swimming SA rules.  Max 5 minutes rest between swims.
